William "Glenn"'s Story

Life Sergeant Major (RET) William “Glenn” Sutphin Sergeant Major Sutphin entered the Army in November 1975. He attended Basic/AIT Training at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Upon completion of Basic/AIT he moved to Fort Benning, Georgia where he attended Airborne School. Upon completion of Airborne School he went to his first duty assignment, Combat Support Company, 2d Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment from March 1976 to June 1982. During his tenure in the Battalion, he served in all positions from Ammo Bearer to Platoon Sergeant. In June 1982, Sergeant Major Sutphin moved to Germany and was assigned to the 2d Armored Division (Forward) until June 1985. His positions here included Platoon Sergeant and Battalion Operations Sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion, 41st Infantry. Upon completion of his assignment in Germany, Sergeant Major Sutphin moved to Fort Benning, Georgia from June 1985 to August 1991. His assignments here include two years as a Senior Drill Sergeant, Delta Company, 2d Battalion, 54th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Training Brigade; Instructor, Infantry Mortar Platoon Course from August 1987 to August 1988; Senior Instructor for the Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course and Branch Chief from August 1988 to August 1990; and Deputy Commandant and Detachment Commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, Henry Caro Noncommissioned Officers Academy from August 1990 to August 1991. In August 1991, Sergeant Major Sutphin moved to Camp Hovey, Korea where he served as the First Sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade, 2d Infantry Division until August 1992. His next assignment was to G3 Operations Sergeant, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 82d Airborne Division until December 1993. Upon completion of this assignment, he moved to Fort Bliss, Texas where he attended the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy until July 1994. til June 1995. Sergeant Major Sutphin was then selected to assume duties as the First Sergeant of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 82d Airborne Division. Her served in this position until June 1996 then moved to the 82d Airborne Division Staff where he served as the G3 Sergeant Major for the 82D Airborne Division until May 2000. In March of 2000, he was selected to be the next Sergeant Major for the Battle Command Training Program (BCTP) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In June 2000, he assumed duties working for the Chief of Staff of the Army as the Battle Command Training Program (BCTP) Sergeant Major until June 2002. He worked directly with all major units in the Army ensuring all units would operationally combat ready in all aspects of operational requirements. In March 2002, he was selected to serves as the Joint Task Force-180 Operations Sergeant Major (Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan), which his assignment there was from July 2002 to May 2003. He retired 31 January 2004 and now works as a Defense Contractor in the Republic of Georgia for Cubic Defense Applications Group. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, eight awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, two awards of the Army Commendation Medal, three awards of the Army Achievement Medal, the Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Drill Sergeant Badge, and numerous other foreign awards and decorations. He is currently working on his fourth year of college to complete his Bachelors Degree in Business Resource Management. He is currently working in the Republic of Georgia as a Military Analyst. Sergeant Major (RET) Sutphin has two daughters, Ashlea (30) and Lori (26) and currently resides in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
